ONE BIG PHI 2010: JUMPSTART
by Kevin Fernandez, PHI '08B

A hundred bucks to watch Sugarfree perform and UP medical students dance, and to enjoy a free drink – One Big Phi 2010: Jumpstart definitely did not disappoint. The event was held last November 22, 2010 at the Bellagio Square. One Big Phi 2010 was a huge success as UP Medicine freshmen, sophomores, ICCs, clerks, and interns alike, got together for a night to remember.
The night was graced by the awesome hosting tandem of Brod Mark Terence Pua Mujer φ’10 and Sis Marla De Castro φ’10 (there was definitely chemistry between them). The other bands that performed aside from Sugarfree were upcoming bands Mike’s Apartment and Chilitees, together with this year’s FATE 2010 Battle of the Bands Champion, the PHI Band, composed of Brods Ryan Julius Angeles Bañez φ’02 and Ace Robert Bañas Alfabeto φ’09 alternating on rhythm and lead guitar, Sis Rita Gollaba φ’07 on bass guitar, Brod Joshua Anton Ostoy Yabut φ’08B on keyboards, Brod John Michael Paraiso Baking φ’07 on percussion, and Brod Jon Paolo Sandico Pineda φ’08B and Sis Aiza Ababan φ’08, together with newcomers Brod Jose Carlo Marcellana Artiaga φ’10 and Sis Nika Reyes φ’10, alternating on vocals. The audience also enjoyed dance performances from the Phi Brods and Sisses from each of the year levels.
Again, watching Sugarfree perform and Interns dance to the tune of “I Want It That Way” with lighters as props – who wouldn’t have a good time? The event was definitely a 10 in terms of entertainment level.
The highlight of One Big Phi is the formal introduction of the newest Phi Brods and Sisses to the UP Medicine Community. Through videos and dance performances prepared by the newcomers, this objective was achieved. Phi Batch 2010, Zodiacs, led by Dennis Raymond Leoncio Sacdalan, are as follows: Jose Carlo Marcellana Artiaga, Kurt Roland Alfonso Asperas, Jose Fidel Madrid Caballes, Bin Rashid Arabani Chin, Abraham Enriquez Cruz, Robert Zaid Dela Rosa Diaz, Kim Paolo Lugtu Lorenzo, Kenneth Roy Perez Mendoza, Abdel Hadi Malali Mohammed Isa, Mark Terence Pua Mujer, and Ashraf Abubakar Tawasil.
Overall, the event wouldn't have been successful if it weren't for the presence of the rest of the UP Medicine Community that night. 'Till next year folks.
Once again, welcome to the Phi Family, Zodiacs and BonaPHIed. Also, congratulations to Brod Joseff Karl Uy Fernandez for heading the successful event. All for PHI!
