A Celebration of Service and Brotherhood: Linggo ng Pagkalma and Anniversary Mass and Dinner
by Kevin Fernandez, PHI '08B

Pagkalma, or “Pagkalinga sa Kalusugan ng Mamamayan”, is the service arm of the Phi Kappa Mu and the Phi Lambda Delta. Since its conception in 1969, the PHI has been offering service-oriented activities to our less-fortunate countrymen. Every year, it is honored through “Linggo ng Pagkalma”, a week-long set of different activities. This year, through the efforts of Senior Guardian of the Temple Joshua Anton Ostoy Yabut Φ08B and Venerable Preceptor Ardynne Martin Corcelles Mallari Φ08B, the line of activities included a blood drive, the Fraternity Anniversary Mass and Dinner, and Pagkalma Night.
Last August 16, in cooperation with the PGH Blood Bank, a blood drive entitled “Operation Blood Brother” was held at the UP College of Medicine. This project serves to ease the never-ending blood supply problem of the Philippine General Hospital. That day, thirty-four people decided to help out and give blood to our dear hospital.
One of the highlights of the weeklong event is the Fraternity Anniversary, marking its 77th year of existence. This year’s celebration was sensational, thanks to the efforts of Venerable Preceptor Ardynne Mallari. Last August 19, a mass dedicated to the fraternity was held at the PGH Chapel at 6 PM. Afterwards, the celebration continued with dinner with a short program at the function room of Robinson’s Place Residencies. The brods who attended the dinner definitely had a good time, thanks to the antics of hosting tandem Brods Christopher Salamaed Constantino Φ09 and Jose Antonio Tan Paulino Φ09. After a few updates from the officers for the alumni, the newest doctors of the fraternity were honored – Brods Gerald Marion Maramag Abesamis Φ05, Alvin Christopher Sy Chu Φ05, Bayani Soriño Pasco Jr., Φ05, and Recivall Pascual Salongcay Φ05. The night ended with a speech from Phi Kappa Mu Alumni Association President Brod Jose Jonas Dino Del Rosario Φ86. The rest of the alumni present that night were the following: Mariano Vinluan Dela Cruz Jr Φ49, Nestor Sanvictores Pareja Φ58, Jaime Jose Roque Hilao Φ60, Manuel Tan Chua Chiaco Jr Φ67, Mario Ballesteros Geronilla Φ69B, Jose Castillo Gonzales Φ69, Ernerio Timan Alboliras Φ72, Angel Antonio Estrella Φ72, Generoso Doloso Torres Φ72, Edgardo Guillermo Gonzales Φ73, Abundio Asis Balgos Φ76, Henry Costa Costa Φ80, Edwin Chiong Reyes Φ80, Chuck Stephen Garcia Mangubat Φ82, Patrick Paul Ampil Litonjua Φ86, Karlos Noel Rojas Aleta Φ91, Eduard Malaca Alfanta Φ98, Jose Carlos Cantillo Estil Jr Φ98, Alduz Inri Surio Cabaza Φ00, Richmond Go Ocao Chang Φ00, Giovanni Geneveo Geronilla Φ00, Dennis Roland Solis Lopez Φ00, Arthur Dessi Estrada Roman Φ00, Frederick Lawrence Aquino Tumaneng Φ00, Jerome Sarmiento Ramos Φ01, Paul Nimrod Borja Firaza Φ02, Carlo Josemaria Diño Rubio Φ02, Don Nestor Nepomuceno Santiago Φ02, Ronnie Enriquez Baticulon Φ03, Cesar Vincent Lopez Villafuerte Φ03, Jonathan Dela Cruz Galingan Φ05, and Gino Francesco Agoncillo Cuesta Φ06. Congratulations to Venerable Preceptor Ardynne Mallari for the well-attended anniversary celebration!
Pagkalma Night is a venue where brods and sisses can unwind and enjoy each other’s company through good food and fun games. This year’s event was organized by Sis May David Φ08 and Brod Joshua Yabut Φ08B. The lineup of games included charades, “Pinoy Henyo”, and Wii Rockband. It was definitely a night to remember.
Congratulations to Senior Guardian of the Temple Joshua Anton Ostoy Yabut for the success of this year’s Linggo ng Pagkalma. All for PHI!
