THE 3RD ANNUAL PHI FEBRUARY RIOT
by Kevin Fernandez, PHI '08B
On the eve of February 19, the rooftop of Ocean Towers echoed with cheers of joy and merriment as the brods of the Phi Kappa Mu came together for the Annual February Riot. Over a hundred brods, both resident and alumni, came not only to renew the fire of their brotherhood, but also to recognize the efforts of two particular brods to serve our country – Jose Castillo Gonzales, Φ69A and Martin Donato Bautista, Φ84B; Brod Jogon, for being selected as the PGH Director during the December 2009 BOR meeting, and Brod Martin for running in this year’s National Elections as a senator.
The newest batch of brods, Φ09 Ninetails, was introduced to the alumni brods during the event, and to mark their presence in the event, they delivered a song performance as a batch. It was their first time to witness how the brotherhood of the PHI goes way back, and how strong it still is until today.
One of the highlights of the event was when Brod Gonzalo Carino Robles, Φ65, together with the live band, offered a song he wrote to Brod Martin to show his sincere support in the upcoming elections. Indeed, it was one of those moments in PHI where you can feel the strong and infallible brotherhood that is not affected by seniority or age.
The night was capped with the a frat song that was for the books – over a hundred brods, both young and old, wearing the same-sized yellow shirt with the name “Dr. Balikbayan: Martin D. Bautista” printed on it. It was quite a spectacle.
