PHI FRESHMAN WELCOMING ACTIVITY A BIG HIT
by Nino Lucero, PHI '07
Last June 18, 2009, the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity together with Phi Lambda Delta Sorority, held its annual freshman welcoming activity entitled “The Big Hit”. It was held on the UPCM grounds, different stations were set up around campus. The event was carried out as an amazing race type of activity. The freshmen were given different challenges and had to accomplish these as quickly as possible. Attendance was excellent with a total of 147 participants, all from class 2014.
Spearheaded by this year’s Brother Prior, Leonard T. Seña, the event took on a more mature theme for the freshmen. The big hit was themed after the classic mafia trilogy, “The Godfather”. Complete with audiovisual presentations expertly executed by the fraternity’s publicity team, props such as grandfather clocks, guns and costumes provided by different brods and sisses, the theme was seamless.
After the fun and games came the dinner and introduction of the fraternity and sorority to the freshmen, hosted by LUIV student Kevin Fernandez Phi 08b. Prizes such as stethoscopes and medical books were raffled out and awarded to the winners of the race. A performance by the Phi Band kept the entertainment level up to keep the freshmen preoccupied.
After the dinner, a speech was given by Phi Kappa Mu alumni Vincent M. Varilla Phi 04b. Shortly after a speech was given by Dra. Zamora-Rocaza of the Phi Lambda Delta.
The Big Hit was a big success with a record breaking attendance from the freshmen and an over-the-top mafia theme.
