Empowerment Through Mobility 4 Successfully Launched in Manila
by Kevin Fernandez, PHI '08B

Empowerment Through Mobility (ETM 4), one of the Phi Kappa Mu Fraternity’s flagship projects, aims to help indigent Filipino patients nationwide who are in dire need of a wheelchair, and those who desire to improve their lives despite their physical disabilities. In the past three years, approximately 2,750 wheelchairs have been distributed all over the country. This year, another 1,100 wheelchairs will be given to those in need.
Last January 10, 2011, ETM 4 was successfully launched with the first of a series of wheelchair turnovers. The first wheelchair turnover was held at the Manila City Hall, wherein 250 wheelchairs were given to the City of Manila through Mayor Alfredo Lim.
The atmosphere at the Manila City Hall that morning was very pleasant with hundreds in attendance, complete with a marching band. The short program started with an inspiring message from Mr. Rafaelito Garayblas, the Executive Secretary to the Mayor. It was followed by the introduction of Mayor Alfredo Lim by Engr. Ignacio Reynaldo, and then the formal turnover. Project Head Brod Jayson Rosario Paragas ϕ08B shared a few words regarding this year’s ETM. Mayor Alfredo Lim’s speech followed, wherein he reiterated his admiration for the fraternity’s noble doing, and for setting an example for others. He’s hoping that this project be continued in the years to come. The program ended with a photo op of the brods present, together with Mayor Lim and the recipients.
Congratulations to Brod Jayson Paragas for the successful launch of the fourth leg of Empowerment Through Mobility! All for PHI!
The next wheelchair turnovers are scheduled on February 12 in the Quezon City Memorial Circle (with Mayor Herbert Bautista), and March 3 in Laguna.
