Phi brods continuously receive distinction.
On its third year, JCI Senate Philippines, DOH, PhilHealth, and PCSO recognized ten doctors as the Outstanding Filipino Physicians for 2009 for opting to devote themselves in the service of Filipino despite their stature as achievers in the field of medicine. Two of the awardees, Dr. Mario Salud de Villa Φ51, and Dr. Charles Yap Yu Φ78, are loyal sons of the Phi Kappa Mu.
The award was conferred last November 23, 2009 at the Manila Hotel Centennial Hall.
A devoted servant of the poor
Brod Mario, a general surgeon by profession, is not just one of the country's best surgical specialist; he is also a person dedicated to serve his countrymen. After his training for surgery in PGH, he continued serving the indigent sick Filipinos in depressed underserved communities in more than half of the provinces of the country. He also helped establish a number of organizations, which include the Kapisanan ng mga Anak ng Kalayaan (KAK), the Tuason Community Center Foundation, the Integrated Volunteer Services of the Philippines (IVSP), and the UP Manila Ugnayan ng Pahinungod, presently know as the Office of Pahinungod and Continuing Education.
TB Expert
Brod Charles Yu is an internationally acclaimed expert in tuberculosis, particularly in public-private mix DOTS. He had directly treated thousands of TB patients over his more than 20 years of practice even without financial gain. He is also active in influencing other physicians by providing training, guidelines, and advocacies. He is also instrumental in the development of the DOTS certification system and standards, which are now used by Philhealth for accreditation, cited by WHO, and replicated worldwide. During his term as the Chair of the Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis, he transformed the organization into a highly professional one, making it a grantee of prestigious institutions like Global Fund, CDG, and USAID. He was also one the pillars of De La Salle Health Sciences Institute who built up many of its units, including the Clinical Epidemiology Unit and TB Research Unit, Basic Research Unit, Bioavailability Unit, Center for Indigenous Medicine, and Health Allied Medicine Unit.
