The Diamond Ball

Every year, the Fraternity holds a formal ball where alumni and resident brothers get to interact and renew their brotherhood. The formal ball also serves as the induction of fraternity neophytes and the newly elected executive council.
To celebrate the Diamond Founding Anniversary of the Fraternity, the formal ball was moved from its usual March schedule to a date in December to accommodate the US-based brothers who would be returning to the country for the Christmas holidays. Early on, a date was picked which took in consideration the line-up of activities UPMASA had prepared. December 17 was chosen. Around May of 2008, the resident brothers surveyed the many hotels in the metropolis for the venue. Makati Shangri-la was eventually chosen in light of its spacious facilities, superior offerings, and convenient location. The fraternity booked the entire Quezon Ballroom for the Diamond Celebrations.
The Diamond Ball was envisioned to be the biggest gathering of brothers from every decade of the fraternity’s celebrated history. To achieve this, the fraternity sent personalized invitations to brothers residing in the country and corresponded with brothers who are staying abroad through e-mail. At the same, the Diamond Ball was billed to be the most expensive Phi gathering to date. The organizers sought to raise PHP 800,000.00 for the Diamond Ball. No expense was spared in preparing for the night’s festivities – a celebrity guest host, the band Rhythm in Blue, Manila Philharmonic Orchestra were called on to provide entertainment to the brothers and their guests. The organizers were able to raise close to one million pesos through ticket sales and sponsorships.
On the night of December 17, close to 400 brothers and guests gathered at the Quezon Ballroom of Makati Shangri-la to celebrate the Fraternity’s 75th founding anniversary. As expected, it was the biggest gathering of brothers in recent years- around 240 alumni and resident brothers were present. It was also among the biggest gathering of UPCM alumni and students to date.
Formal balls are not mere self-gratifying events that organizations throw for themselves. They are venues where the old meets the new, where antiquated beliefs are updated, and most importantly, where ties are renewed. The Diamond Ball brought together brods from different ages - each renewing their commitment to the Fraternity and to each other. Equally important, it is during such gatherings that brothers locally-based and abroad alike commit to fraternity projects conceived for the benefit of the UPCM, PGH, and underserved communities in line with fraternity’s pillars of Excellence, Leadership, Service and Brotherhood. During the Ball, Melvin Valera talked of the vision and accomplishments of Project OPERA, the Operating Room Assistance Program; Dr. Rufino Co spoke of the planning, conceptualization and future plans for Empowerment through Mobility; and Jose Rafael Marfori presented a teaser of the upcoming Phi Diamond Book, a chronicling of the fraternity’s storied history and legacy. The Diamond Ball also served as the launch pad of future Fraternity activities – the most celebrated of which was the upcoming Diamonds in the Rough, the National Search of Outstanding Young Community Doctors.
